Youth Service Day

Youth Service Day on September 20th  was a great success! Nine students participated with 2 fifth-grade helpers. A great time was had by all who took part. They worked on their projects from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., then had time for socializing, playing games and enjoying  pizza! As one of the community members who benefitted from this group’s hard work, the writer here was amazed at how much these young volunteers accomplished in their 3 hours of work. Thank you all so much for all you did. Another thank you to the chaperones who also gave up their Saturday to make this project possible and to Erin and Shelle who organized the event. And thank you, too, to all who donated cookies to feed the hungry young. These were very much enjoyed!

Jeannie Schroeder is in Texas assisting in the shelters. She has been checking in and helping wherever she can. Anke Celano has just left for a shelter in Texas. Sarah Hermiller is leaving on September 30th, and will spend the first 2 weeks in October helping in Texas also. Please keep these people in your thoughts as they bring Red Cross aid to these latest unfortunate hurricane victims.

Evelyn Palte has just returned from three weeks assisting with victims of Hurricane Ike in Texas. She reports that progress is being made, although slowly, and that shelters and volunteers are still needed.

Military

We continue to assist military families with emergencies but have not sent packages out yet. We are looking for updated addresses so we can send packages overseas soon.  So, if you know someone that is in the military, please call the office

with the address.

Office Help

The chapter is also looking for office volunteers.  People skills and willingness to learn are the criteria.

Recipes

Last month we featured June Douglas’ delicious Soda Pop Cake. This month’s recipe comes from office worker Erin Plescher. This is a tilapia recipe she makes for her family, which is easy and delicious!

Erin’s Under The Sea Tilapia

2 cups of canned spinach or fresh spinach (enough to cover fish)

4 cups (or so) of fresh white mushrooms, sliced

2 cups of crushed garlic-flavored croutons—enough to cover the bottom of a 9 x 12 pan.

4-6 filets of Tilapia fish.

½ cup Italian salad dressing.

½ tablespoon spicy mustard.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Cover the bottom of a 9 x 12 pan with the crushed croutons (it’s the sand of the ocean).

Lay 4-6 filets of tilapia on the croutons (the fish in the ocean).

Cover the fish with spinach (the seaweed).

Cover the spinach with mushroom slices (these resemble jellyfishes).

Mix the Italian salad dressing with the mustard and drizzle on top.

Cover with foil and bake for 30-40 minutes at 350 degrees.  Enjoy!

We would like to make this a regular feature in our Newsnotes, so if you have a favorite recipe you would like to submit, please send them on to the Red Cross office.  (Samples would be very much appreciated!  :) Terry says samples are “required”. However, we will take recipes without this “requirement”! )
